j0384726Should GEN support the Lexus Eco Challenge?

Lexus retained Scholastic to develop and conduct its Lexus Eco Challenge Program. GEN has a high opinion of Scholastic. GEN’s Publisher was once a Scholastic editorial manager, and Gen’s CEO has in the past, in his capacity as a Weekly Reader executive, partnered with Scholastic. Likewise, GEN is of the opinion that the Lexus Eco Challenge program itself is a good program. GEN has not been approached by Scholastic or Lexus to request GEN support or endorsement or the GEN Seal of Approval. The Lexus Eco Challenge program is currently on GEN’s “We Support” list. GEN nonetheless seeks your opinion because Lexus is an automaker whose vehicles are not, in GEN’s inexpert opinion, above average in terms of their miles per gallon ratings as compared to all available passenger vehicles of all classes,  sizes, models and prices. On the other hand, the Lexus website provides information indicating that Lexus is making significant and successful efforts to improve its impact on the environment. We recommend you click the links below to review the Lexus environmental  activity information and seek Eco Challenge program information before answering this GEN SPEAK OUT! Poll.

j0384726Outcome: GEN users asked us to remove Ducks Unlimited from its “We Support” list. We did.

On the one hand, GEN was aware that Ducks Unlimited has played a major role in preserving habitat for waterfowl and other wildlife. On the other hand, GEN was aware that a primary motivation of many of its members is related to hunting. GEN itself did not think its own opinions about the type of hunting in which most DU members engage was particularly relevant. GEN was aware that many non-hunters are opposed to most or all hunting of wildlife not necessary to human survival, and that some associate hunting in the U.S. with the issue of guns and positions of the NRA as they relate to gun control. Ducks Unlimited itself takes this stand on its website: “Participation in waterfowl hunting fuels the passion of many DU members to give something back to the resources that make their outdoor experiences so enjoyable. DU was founded by a group of waterfowl hunters more than 65 years ago, and today 90 percent of DU members are hunters. Through the support of this sportsman constituency, DU has been able to conserve more than 10 million acres of habitat across North America in the areas that are most important to ducks and geese.” GEN understands and respects DU’s stand and acknowledges the major role it has played in preserving wildlife habitat in the U.S. but was leaning toward removal of DU from its “We Support” list, in the broader interest of those it serves. We recommended that users review the DU website at http://www.ducks.org/ before responding to our Poll, and welcomed thoughtful input from site visitors toward our decision in this matter. Users overwhelmingly asked us to remove DU, and we did.

The Millennium of ALL Earth’s Children

A Green Education Network K-12 Special Project

Inspired by Earth Day, this is a Campaign to INSPIRE More People to Save Earth’s Climate and Resources FOR THE SAKE OF ALL CHILDREN BORN IN THIS MILLENIUM. Our first goal is to convince the United Nations and governments throughout the world to declare the 1,000-year period that we entered in 2000 “The Millennium of ALL Earth’s Children”. Our second goal is to convince our own U.S. government to erect an INSPIRATIONAL MEMORIAL in Washington DC expressing that declaration.

The Millennium Campaign starts here with YOU!

The burning of coal to produce electricity is presently a major contributor to global warming and acid rain. There is presently no such thing as “clean coal”. The term as advertised by the coal industry to date is an oxymoron. Scrubbers may reduce coal-burning pollutants but do not eliminate them. We support Research & Development to make coal burning CLEANER, but that is not what the ads are promoting. Besides, we need truly clean energy alternatives. We believe “clean coal” ads AS CURRENTLY BROADCAST should be banned unless and until revised because they are currently misleading and harmful to the public interest. The FCC and FTC regulate against misleading advertising that is less harmful or harmful to fewer people than the current “clean coal” ads. Evidently it will take an even greater public outcry to impact the coal industry and our own government. Widespread ridicule of the ads has not had the impact we hoped to see.
