The One-cent Coin Costs 1.26 Cents to Make, Wasting Resources, Costing Taxpayers Millions! CNN.com and the U.S. Mint reported in December of 2008 that a penny with an assigned value of $0.01 actually cost $0.0126 to make. Over 7 billion pennies and 1 billion nickels were produced in 2007. The cost of producing them rises with the cost of energy and the metals used. Congressman Luis Gutierrez,  whose House subcommittee oversees the U.S. Mint, said that producing the coins adds to our national debt and set the U.S. Treasury and taxpayers back about $100 million in 2007 alone.

A FUN-Raising and FUND-raising Student-Teacher-Parent Crusade to Save Energy and Metal! It costs more than one cent in energy, metal and labor to mine and process the ores, combine the metals, and then produce and transport a penny.

Guided by teachers and supported voluntarily by parents and local stores, students join in a “Go Green, Ban the Penny” crusade, bringing all the pennies they can scrounge to school. Their goal is to fill old-but-cleaned wastebaskets or trashcans brought from home and “dressed up” in art sessions, classes, or homeroom to call attention to the waste and the school’s “recycling” fundraiser!

Click Here to Join the Crusade by Registering Your Classroom or School for Nationwide Contest Eligibility Now! It’s As Easy as Entering Your Email Address. There’s never any cost, and no obligation if you change your mind!

Imagine the ongoing fun for everyone as the pennies accumulate in containers giving a whole new meaning to the term “piggy bank”! Don’t be surprised if every participating classroom collects a wastebasket of pennies worth up to $100 before the school-year ends!

Raise even more by asking local stores to put Ban the Penny! piggybanks on their counters. Many students will be happy to loan their idle piggybanks, or you can make them in class from coffee cans, oatmeal boxes, or jars with metal lids.

Nationwide Contest, 500 Winning Schools, 5 Winning States When you join the crusade by entering your email address, your classroom or school is entered in the nationwide contest for the most pennies collected. The top Fortunate 500 Schools and Classrooms© and their Go Green crusade-leading teachers will be awarded Honors Certificates and community bragging rights! The 5 States collecting the most pennies PER CAPITA will win Highest Honors Certificates for their Governor, AND for each of the 5 schools and their crusade-leading teachers collecting the most pennies PER ENROLLED STUDENT. And their bragging rights are nationwide! And when you register for the contest, you’re automatically entered for our no-purchase-necessary drawing for a Wireless Mini-Laptop and other prizes!

After entering your classroom or school to join the crusade, click here each month or so starting Jan 1 to tell us the total number of cumulative pennies your classroom or school has collected SO FAR. We want to see the giant national trashcan on the Green Education Network website filling up with pennies as the school-year progresses!  Click here starting Feb 1, 2010 to see the STATE collected-pennies PER CAPITA standings.

School FUN-Raiser AND FUND-Raiser  We urge all teachers to join now and start collecting pennies for the Go Green, Ban the Penny program before the new school year starts, even though the contest runs until the end of the 2009-2010 school year. WHY? Because it’s not against the rules. Because you’ll collect more pennies. Because we’ll collect more pennies nationwide. BECAUSE THE NEED FOR GREEN EDUCATION IS VITAL AND URGENT! How much will you raise in funds for your classroom or school? Don’t be surprised if every participating classroom collects a wastebasket of pennies worth up to $100 before the end of the school-year! If there were 15 classrooms in your school, that would be $1,500 for having fun and integrating Green Education and Environmental Education into your curriculum and lesson plans. That’s better than asking students to sell cookies, candy, pizza or gift wrap!

More Ways to Have FUN! Multiply the value of your collected pennies. Call a local branch bank manager and TV station or newspaper and tell them you and your  biggest penny collectors are coming to the bank on a certain day at a certain time to “cash in” a trove of pennies as part of the Go Green, Ban the Penny crusade. You may need several cars or even a truck, and that’s part of the learning! It’s a great story your local TV station or newspaper will want to cover. Won’t your school community be proud!

How will your class or school spend its pile of real “green”? However you decide! Want an idea? Check out our Green eMall. It offers everything from trees you can plant to birdfeeders to energy saving light bulbs, and environmental books, DVDs, eBooks and more!
