New US Climate Change Report: Bad to Worse

Even as Congress belatedly tackles legislation that would cut U.S. carbon emissions and international negotiators have bickered over a global climate deal in Bonn, a new report by several federal agencies underscores the truths that too often risk getting lost in politics: global warming is real, it’s happening now and if we don’t act soon, [...]

Tidal Power

Tidal power is a form of hydropower that converts the energy of tides into electricity or other useful forms of power.
Although not yet widely used, tidal power has potential for future electricity generation. Tides are more predictable than wind energy and solar power. Historically, tide mills have been used, both in Europe and on the [...]

Oceans, an Overview

An ocean (from Greek, Okeanos (Oceanus)) is a major body of saline water, and a principal component of the hydrosphere. Approximately 72% of the Earth’s surface (an area of some 361 million square kilometers) is covered by ocean, a continuous body of water that is customarily divided into several principal oceans and smaller seas. More [...]

Water, All About It

Image at right, Water in three states: liquid, solid (ice), and (invisible) vapor in air. Clouds are droplets of liquid, condensed from water vapor.
Water is a common chemical substance that is essential for the survival of all known forms of life. In typical usage, water refers only to its liquid form or state, but the [...]

Tropical Cyclones, Hurricanes, and Global Warming

At right: Cyclone Catarina, a rare South Atlantic tropical cyclone, viewed from the International Space Station in March 2004.
A tropical cyclone is a storm system characterized by a large low pressure center and numerous thunderstorms that produce strong winds and flooding rain. Tropical cyclones feed on heat released when moist air rises, resulting in [...]

Arctic and Antarctic Climate: Oceanography

Atmosphere and Ocean Circulation
The atmosphere and ocean act as “heat engines,” always trying to restore a temperature balance by transporting heat toward the poles. Our weather is a manifestation of this phenomenon. Low-pressure systems, such as storms, which can be especially strong in winter, are one of nature’s best ways of transporting heat poleward by [...]

Arctic & Antarctic Environment: Wildlife

The first links in the delicate food chain of Arctic and antarctic wildlife are phytoplankton, krill and shrimp, which in turn feed fish, penguins, whales, seals, and, in the Arctic, polar bears. All are especially vulnerable to the impact of global warming, which is melting the ice and disrupting the ecosystem on which all of that life depends.

Arctic Polar Environment: Indigenous People

The Inuit and other Indigenous people have adapted their way of life to the Arctic Polar Environment, and are threatened by the melting of the Polar Ice Cap sea ice caused by global warming.

Sea Ice

Arctic and Antarctic Sea Ice is associated with an abundance of wildlife, plays an important role on global climate, and is especially sensitive to global warming.

Polar Ice Caps Video

Arctic sea ice reflects sunlight, keeping the polar regions cool and moderating global climate. According to scientific measurements, Arctic sea ice has declined dramatically over at least the past thirty years, with the most extreme decline seen in the summer melt season.
